LabCoat Terms, Privacy and Safety

Last updated: October 6, 2026. LabCoat is in beta, so these may change. If we make a big change we will tell signed-in users.

Terms of Use

LabCoat is a free robotics app and website made by DigbyLabs ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using LabCoat you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

1. Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old to use LabCoat. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms on your behalf. Keep your password private. You are responsible for what happens under your account.

2. Beta software

LabCoat is early software. It can have bugs, change without notice, or go offline. We do not promise it will always work, always be available, or keep your data forever. Keep your own backups of anything important, including your firmware, sketches and robot settings.

3. Free to use

LabCoat is free. We may add paid hardware or optional services later. We will not charge you for something you are already using without telling you first.

4. Your robots and your responsibility

LabCoat can send commands to motors, servos, lights, and other hardware you build or own. You are the operator. You decide what to connect, what to power on, and when to run it. You are responsible for building safely and for any damage, injury or loss that comes from the hardware you control with it.

5. What you may not do

We can suspend or remove an account that breaks these rules or puts others at risk.

6. Your content

Your robot lists, settings and anything you put in your account belong to you. You give us permission to store and process them only so we can run LabCoat for you (for example, to match your robots between the desktop app and the website). We do not sell your content.

7. Our work

The LabCoat name, logo, app and website are ours. Third-party libraries and fonts keep their own licenses.

8. No warranty

LabCoat is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, including that it is accurate, safe for your particular hardware, reliable, or fit for a particular purpose.

9. Limit of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, DigbyLabs and the people who work on it are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for loss of data, profits, equipment, or for injury or property damage that results from hardware you build, power or control. Where the law does not allow a limit, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the past 12 months, which for the free version is zero. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not fully apply to you.

10. Ending your account

You can stop using LabCoat any time. To close your account and delete your data, contact us (see below). We may also end the service or your access, with notice when we can.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA, without regard to conflict of law rules. Disputes will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Virginia, unless the law where you live says otherwise.

Privacy Policy

Short version: we collect as little as we need to run your account, we do not sell your data, and your robot's security keys stay on your own computer.

What we collect

What we do not collect or sync

Waitlist

If you sign up for our waitlist, we collect your email address and your interest category (maker, teacher, investor, etc.). We use this only to send you updates about LabCoat availability. You can ask us to remove your email at any time.

How we use it

To run your account, keep the service secure, match your robots between devices, and fix bugs. We do not sell your information and we do not use it for advertising.

Who else sees it

Only the services we need to run the website. Cloudflare passes web traffic to our server and may collect basic analytics (page views, country, browser type) through Cloudflare Web Analytics. This does not use cookies or track individual users. We may share information if the law requires it, or to protect people from serious harm.

Your robot's network

Home network details such as robot addresses are only shown to the owner of that setup. Other signed-in users see them hidden.

Keeping it safe

Passwords are hashed. The site uses HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a unique password. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you.

Your choices

You can ask us to show, correct or delete your account data at any time by contacting us. Deleting your account removes your profile, synced robot list and settings.

Children and teens

LabCoat is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. Users aged 13-17 may use LabCoat only with the agreement of a parent or guardian (see the Terms of Use above). If you believe a child under 13 has signed up, contact us and we will delete the account.

Safety and Disclaimer

Robots can hurt people and break things. Motors, arms, wheels and power systems can pinch, crush, burn, shock and start fires. Read this before you control any robot with LabCoat.

Before you run anything

Remote control

Controlling a robot over the internet adds delay and can drop out. A command may arrive late or not at all. Only use remote control when you can see what the robot is doing and when nobody can be hurt if it does not stop right away.

Power and batteries

Lithium batteries and high-current power supplies can start fires. Use proper fuses, wire sizes, battery protection and chargers for your build. Shut the robot down properly, for example with LabCoat's POWER DOWN, before cutting power.

Information and AI features

LabCoat's guides, wiring suggestions, generated code, pin maps and any answers from AI features can be wrong or incomplete for your hardware. Check them against your parts' datasheets before powering anything. Do not rely on LabCoat for anything where a mistake could hurt someone, and it is not a medical, safety-critical, or professional engineering tool.

Not an official product of other brands

LabCoat is not made by or endorsed by Espressif, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or any other hardware maker. Their names belong to them and are used only to say what LabCoat works with.

You are in charge

By using LabCoat to control hardware, you accept that you are responsible for how it is built, powered and run, and for any harm or damage it causes. See the Terms of Use above for the legal details.
